A clear road for hiking and whitewater rafting trips to the rocky snow caped Colorado mountains

A River Rafting Road Trip

Want to create the ultimate rafting experience? How about a rafting road trip? Hit multiple rivers, all offering unique rafting experiences in the following rafting loop.

It all starts in Denver, where you’ll head 30 miles west on I-70 and stop in the historic mining town of Idaho Springs.

Idaho Springs

In Idaho Springs, you'll raft Clear Creek either on a beginner, intermediate, or advanced raft trip. You’ll hit any range of rapids from class II to class IV. You’ll flow through a rugged, spectacular mountain canyon filled with granite boulders and towering pine trees and finish up with a float through historic Idaho Springs.

From Idaho Springs, continue heading west for 40 miles on I-70 until you hit Frisco, your next rafting stop.

Frisco

Frisco offers some very special rafting trips, including the Blue River Half Day Raft Trip and the Ten Mile Creek Half Day Raft trip. Each offers excellent white water, although Blue River is an early season run as it's dependent on snowpack.

From Frisco, head into the Arkansas River Valley and hit up Buena Vista. A beautiful 60 miles south of Frisco, Buena Vista offers some of the country’s best whitewater.

Buena Vista

From Buena Vista, there are several awesome raft trips to choose from, including KODI’s most popular raft trips through Browns Canyon National Monument. By this time, you might be ready to truly test your skills. If this is the case, you might want to consider KODI’s Numbers Raft Trips. These trips take you down the Numbers, a series of rapids so intense, they were numbered instead of named.

Now that your road trip is done, you can make the easy and scenic drive back to Denver along Hwy 285. However, if you’re not ready to call it quits there’s always KODI’s Kremmling office, where you can jump on the Upper Colorado River for a scenic float and gorgeous views.

Your Raft Guide’s Qualifications

As a guest on a raft trip, you can’t help but wonder how qualified your guide is. I mean, your life is quite literally in your raft guide's hands.

If you’re rafting in Colorado, it’s comforting to know every raft guide must meet a minimal list of requirements set by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

These requirements include:

  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • 50 hours of on-river training using paddles, oars, or whichever equipment the guide will be using on river trips
  • Instruction on a variety of other topics, some of which include river hazards, river rescue, emergency procedures, maneuvering rafts, and running rapids
  • Guides must have seen the section of river they will be guiding, and they must pass a certification run with commercial guests and a guide instructor on board the raft

With KODI, our guide training doesn't stop at the minimum. We offer additional courses to improve our guides' river safety skills. These classes include:

Awareness Water and Rope Rescue: A course designed to develop knowledge of scene assessment and incident size up, resource ordering, activation procedures for rescue response, site control and scene management, and hazard recognition and mitigation procedure.

Swiftwater Rescue: A course that provides students with the fundamentals of survival in moving water

Whitewater Rescue: An intensive, hands-on course where guides learn to use techniques and simple equipment to assess and perform river rescues. The emphasis is on speedy, low-tech, and improvised rescue techniques that are effective and require minimal equipment.

Our commitment is to help you have a great time on the river and to provide you guidance from the most qualified guides with optimal training. Come raft with Kodi and enjoy your river adventure!

Five Reasons to Book an Overnight Rafting Trip

Multi-day raft trips that include camping alongside a river are awesome because they allow for time to unwind and savor life, friends, and mother nature.

But these benefits are simply the beginning. Overnight raft trips offer so much more.

There is no need for money—or decisions

When was the last time you went on a trip WITHOUT your wallet? Imagine how liberating it must feel to know you’ll be taken care of the whole time. It’s kind of like being a kid again.

Camp in extreme comfort

We get it. Camping’s not for everyone. But when you camp overnight with KODI, we put the glam in glamping. After a great day on the river, imagine enjoying a cold drink by the campfire while your guides prepare a delicious multi-course meal.

Really see the stars for the very first time

Unless you’ve camped in the backcountry before, we promise you’ve never seen the stars the way you’ll see them on an overnight raft trip. This delightful and inspiring experience only happens in true remote wilderness, like camping riverside.

Access the backcountry without breaking your back

You can strap a 50-pound pack on your back and hike for days to reach true wilderness, or you can strap on a lifejacket and hop on a raft. From you campsite, you’ll have plenty of time to hike and explore side canyons, waterfalls, historic sites, and scenic overlooks.

Ditch Technology

These days, this might be the most valuable aspect of an overnight raft trip. Finally, you can be completely unplugged. No cell phones, tablets, computers, or anything else that has a cord or requires a signal. This means exactly what you think it means… a true vacation.

Your New Year’s Resolution: Go to Chile with KODI Rafting

Travel internationally this year and experience a multi-sport trip in the heart of Patagonia! Activities on KODI's Chile adventure include whitewater rafting, hiking, horseback riding, fly fishing, yoga, and mountain biking. Stay at a deluxe riverside adventure camp with a hot tub, a sunset bar, massages, wine tasting, and more!

The core of your trip will be whitewater rafting down the Rio Futaleufu & Rio Azul where you’ll raft class IV to class V whitewater.  Read on for little more info on these two awesome rivers!

Rio Futaleufu

The Futaleufu River is known in whitewater circles as one of the most stunning and challenging rivers in the world. It's an exhilarating whitewater power storm with a life force of turquoise, champagne-like water. Riding the spine of this river as it flows through this isolated portion of the glaciated Chilean Andes is an unparalleled experience.

Rio Azul

The headwaters of the Rio Azul lie deep in a glacial river valley to the west of the Futaleufu River. The Rio Azul is one of the colder rivers in the region because it is glacial fed rather than lake fed, which tends to increase the temperature of other rivers in the valley. Because the Azul River has no lake as its source, it's also prone to wild fluctuations in water level and is often the quickest river to respond to changes in precipitation in the Futaleufu River Valley. When the Azul is running, it offers whitewater paddlers some of the best play features and scenery in the valley.

What to do in Colorado During the Winter if You Don’t Ski

Will you be in Colorado this winter? Do you NOT ski? Have no fear. Colorado is a winter wonderland offering plenty of fun activities that don’t require a chairlift, a pair of poles, or a snowboard.

Check out these activities and before you know it, you’ll fall in love with Colorado’s winters.

Snowmobiling

Combine the thrill of a high-speed ride with snowy alpine scenery and you’ve just discovered why snowmobiling is so popular in Colorado. With more than 3,000 miles of snowmobiling trails throughout the state, you won’t have trouble finding a place to rent a fleet and take a snowmobile ride in Colorado.

Book a snowmobile tour with KODI Rafting.

Ziplining

Winter weather + ziplining + snow cats = ultimate Colorado!

Relax and enjoy the views in cozy comfort as you are transported almost 1,000 vertical feet in a Snow Coach to the first zip line departure deck. Look for possible wildlife as the driver points out areas of interest and gives commentary about the history of the area.

Sledding

All you need is an incline and some snow to enjoy this classic activity. Sledding isn't just for kids. People of any age love going fast and taking daring jumps.

Ice Skating

Colorado is filled with mountain lakes, which means there are lots of opportunities for ice skating each winter. There are also numerous indoor rinks scattered across the state with open skate times.

Hot Springs

When it’s snowing, it’s the perfect time to take a dip. Yep, that's right. Our famous hot springs are filled with delectably warm water and are ideal for watching the snow fall.

Ice Fishing

Fishing season doesn't have to end just because the lakes freeze up. Drill a hole, set up a tent, and wait to bait a big one. If you don't have the necessary equipment, most equipment is available to rent near popular ice fishing spots.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is simply hiking... on snow! The difference, however, are the majestic white landscapes that come with snowfall. There's nothing quite like the serenity of a snow-covered Colorado forest.

Dog Sledding

Take your animal-loving friends and family members on a dog sledding trip. These mountain dogs love pulling you across vast, snowy landscapes with stellar views all around.

Ice Climbing

This activity is for the adventurous looking to step out of their comfort zone. Make it to the top of an ice-filled gorge and you'll feel like a true badass.

Train Rides

Colorado offers several historical train rides, many of which operate throughout the winter. These tourist trains are especially popular during the holidays when Santa is known to jump aboard and hand out small treats.

Zip Lining is Amazing and Here’s Why

Zip lining is growing in popularity, especially in Colorado where open space, incredible views, and alpine forests abound.

But zip lining is more than just great views and stellar scenery. Zip lining is an activity in nature that defies, well… nature.

A zip line ride creates the illusion of flying, a feat humans have sought for centuries. From Orville and Wilbur Wright piloting the first powered airplane to modern day base jumpers in squirrel suits, there’s something in our DNA that makes us want to experience the sensation of flight.

Seeing as we haven’t yet figured out a way to grow feathers, a trip through an aerial park on a zip line is a terrific way to get that fix.

There’s more to zip lining than simply flying. The very act of strapping on a harness and connecting it to a wire causes you to break out of your shell.  Zip lining also offers an excellent opportunity to bond with colleagues, friends, and family members. There’s nothing like a shared adrenaline experience to bring people together.

Experience the adrenaline rush, the views, and the memories you'll make on a Colorado zip line adventure with KODI Rafting and Top of the Rockies Zip Line. Contact KODI Rafting today to book your zip line trip.

Here’s an idea! Pair your zip line adventure with a half day KODI rafting trip for a full day of adventure.

Low Water Flow and No Snow… Now What?

It’s fall in Colorado. The river is too low to run and there’s no snow for skiing. So, now what?

The good news is this is Colorado, where there is always an amazing outdoor activity waiting for you.

Check out our list of favorite fall activities that don’t require snow or flow.

Soaking in Hot Springs

Colorado hot springs are ideal when there’s a crisp in the air. Submerge yourself in warm water as the sun shines above you or the stars twinkle. Great for individuals and families alike, there are hot springs in almost all parts of the state.

Bike Riding

Trails are still game before the snow falls. Plus, the cooler weather seems to add to one’s endurance level. Ride through aspen forests and take in the changing leaves or hit up a paved path in the mountains or the city. You’ll get stellar views wherever you choose to ride.

Hiking

While the quintessential Colorado activity is available year-round, fall is especially wonderful. The aspens change into shades of red and gold and the air just smells sweeter. And with most of the tourists gone, you’re more likely to discover total and absolute solitude.

Listening to Elk Bugle

Every September and October, Rocky Mountain National Park becomes the stage for one of the greatest shows of the animal kingdom—the elk rut. In laymen’s terms, that’s mating season, when bull elk call loudly (the official term is bugle) and strut their stuff in order to attract and defend mates. Viewing this spectacle is easy. You’re almost guaranteed a front-row seat.
